4.2 Locating Information in the Library
As soon as they are in preschool, students should learn to find their way around the various sections of the library:
- Children’s books
- Nonfiction
- Comic books and graphic novels
- Periodicals
- Audiobooks
- Oversized books
- Electronic resources
- Etc.
Starting in Elementary Cycle 2, students can be introduced to the Dewey Decimal System, a method of classifying library books that makes it easy to find a book, regardless of what library you are in.
Dewey Classification
The Dewey Decimal Classification System (often known as the Dewey Decimal System) is a way of organizing books in libraries by subject. The system is structured around 10 main classes, each of which is divided into 10 divisions, which can be further subdivided. This system is mostly used to arrange non-fiction books.
