It is now time to write your podcast using the information found during your research. Make sure you keep in mind the following criteria (Google DocsWord or PDF )while writing and producing your podcast.

Outline or Script?

Should we only write an outline or script for our podcast?

Both ways can be relevant depending on the level of ease in delivery, the expertise in the content and the proficiency of the language.  To learn more about the benefits of scripting your podcast, we invite you to watch the following video (until 4:55).

When preparing a podcast script, we must remember that we are not writing for the eyes, but for the ears.  Our choice of words will differ from a written text. We do not listen to the way we read!

There are things to consider when we prepare for a podcast. Keep them in mind when writing your script.

Audience

When listening to audio without visuals, it’s harder to understand long and complex sentences. It’s important to use simple vocabulary in short sentences. To ensure audience understanding without stopping and rewinding the podcast, we need to consider who is listening.

Reduced or Condensed Content

Ideas need to be presented concisely since listeners cannot absorb too much information at once. Any number should be rounded off and larger numbers should be written out so the narrator doesn’t stumble on its pronunciation.

The flow should sound natural (conversational tone) with an average of 100-130 words per minute.

Language and Style

The language register must be appropriate for the targeted audience.  The tone should be conversational.

Here are other tips:

  • Use contractions to sound more natural
  • Use descriptive or visual language
  • Use short sentences
  • Use simple words
  • Restrict the use of pronouns

Important

Be careful, this is not a C1 oral interaction task. Students are delivering a C2-C3 message. Don’t forget to clarify the learning intention and make it visible to your students.

 Tip

Read the text aloud to hear what your text sounds like! You can also record yourself and listen to the clip.

You can use one of these tools to record yourself.
