Now that you have activated your prior knowledge, let’s take a look at what the Ministry of Education of Quebec (MEQ) says about Competency 2 so as to progress toward a common understanding.

Definition

“The competency Reinvests understanding of texts gives students the opportunity to use and integrate newly acquired knowledge. They listen to, read and view a variety of authentic popular, literary and information-based texts in order to explore ideas […] They construct meaning of texts both alone and with others (using a response process at the secondary level). They make use of their understanding of these texts in meaningful reinvestment tasks.” (PFEQ p. 26 Secondary, cycle 2)

Reinvesting understanding of texts gives students opportunities to…

  • use knowledge (information, ideas, knowledge) from texts in different contexts

  • critically question texts, and to select, organize and personalize/adapt newly acquired knowledge from texts in meaningful and authentic reinvestment tasks (i.e. real-life situations)

At both the elementary and secondary levels, Competency 2 is fully developed when students construct meaning of texts, demonstrate understanding of texts, and reinvest understanding of texts.

Students need sufficient time to construct meaning of texts. Constructing meaning of texts is the crucial first step and having sufficient time to understand the texts is an investment, since it prepares the groundwork for the reinvestment task that will follow.

Differences between elementary and secondary

At the elementary level, students carry out a step-by-step reinvestment task using models and their individual product resembles the models.

While, at the secondary level, students learn more about the texts' components and key elements and are introduced to the response process.
